Cut can be referred to the shape of the diamond or the angles and proportions of the diamond.

A master cutter reveals the diamonds true brilliance, fire, and beauty.  Based on scientific formulas, a well cut diamond reflects light that comes in form the top of the stone reflects off a mirror like facet, reflects to another, and ultimately reflecting back out the top of the stone.  If the stone is cut too deep or too shallow the light will not reflect correctly ultimately lowering the brilliance and value of the diamond.

Cut also refers to the shape of the diamond.  When diamonds are a different shape then round they are called fancy cut diamonds.  Fancy diamonds follow a different guideline for cut.

COLOR

Color

Refers to the diamonds absent of color.  Diamonds come in every color of the rainbow, yet white diamonds remain the most popular.

Diamonds are graded from D, absent of color, to Z, light brown or light yellow in color.  Diamonds that are D, E, or F are described as colorless.  Diamonds that are G,H,I, or J are described as near colorless.  Diamonds that are N, O, P, Q, or R are described as very light yellow or brown.  Diamonds S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, or Z are light yellow or light brown in color.  The whiter the diamond, the more rare and desirable the diamond is.

CLARITY

Clarity

Clarity refers to how many inclusions are present in a diamond.  Because diamonds are formed by nature, most diamonds have inclusions, these special markings makes each diamond unique. Depending on the size and location of the inclusion can also determine which grade it will fall into.  Below you will find the different categories of inclusions, beginning with the rarest.

Flawless/internally Flawless (FL- IF)

The diamond is free from inclusions or if blemish on the surface.

Very, Very Small Inclusions (VVS1-VVS2)

Inclusions are difficult for a trained eye to see under 10 power.

Very Small Inclusions (Vs1- VS2)

Inclusions are difficult to somewhat easy to see under 10 power.

Small Inclusions (SI1- SI2)

Inclusions are easily seen under 10 power with a train eye.

Included (I1-I2-I3)

Inclusions are medium to large and can be seen to the unaided eye.

Diamonds are priced by the 4C’s: Cut, color, Clarity, and Carat weight.  Each one is important in determining the value of the diamond.  No one C is more important then the other, and each of the 4C’s will not diminish over time.  Diamonds that have the highest combination of the 4C’s are the rarest and therefore are the most expensive.

CARAT

Carat refers to how much the diamond weighs.  It is a unit of measurement.  A 1-carat diamond is equivalent to .20 grams.  Carat can also be divided into points, there is 100 points in a carat, as an example, a 50 point diamond is a half carat diamond.  Carat is often misinterpreted for size, one 1.00 carat diamond may look smaller then another 1.00 carat diamond, but they weigh the same.  This is because of the cut of the stone.
